BTS : No Logo: Brands, Globalization & Resistance

"The capitalist economic system encourages the outsourcing of labour to developing countries, exploiting poorer nations as a means for global corporations to maximise profits. Another aspect of globalisation affecting the nature of consumers is the global homogenisation of identity and personality encouraged by the spread of powerful cultures like that of the United States. Companies are increasingly producing self-identity for people. Brands and media create a sense of self that is only attainable through the consumption of their brand. Previously self-identity was built around one’s role in the workplace, religion, status etc. now it is a consumable entity."

Accompagnement: Quest Atlantis Legend Video

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantis:Atlantis (in Greek, Ἀτλαντὶς νῆσος, "island of Atlas") is a legendary island first mentioned in Plato's dialogues Timaeus and Critias, written about 360 BC.

According to Plato, Atlantis was a naval power lying "in front of the Pillars of Hercules" that conquered many parts of Western Europe and Africa 9,000 years before the time of Solon, or approximately 9600 BC. After a failed attempt to invade Athens, Atlantis sank into the ocean "in a single day and night of misfortune".

The strange phenomenon of fish and frogs falling with the rain. This is a true story.
Most everybody has heard of the Bermuda Triangle, but the expression has become so clouded with popular hearsay and sensationalism that few can really give an accurate account of what it is. The first gut reaction many people give when asked about the Bermuda Triangle is “I don’t believe in it!” Yet what is it they don’t believe in? The Bermuda Triangle is actually two things. First off, it is a geographic area of the North Atlantic Ocean located off the SouthEast coast of the United States. It generally lies in and around three nodal points: the island of Bermuda, Miami, Florida, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. It can hardly be denied that this area of the Earth does exist. But, of course, when most refer to the Bermuda Triangle they really mean the enigma of the Bermuda Triangle. This is the area’s great controversy. The enigma is that more ships and planes disappear in this area, in fair weather, more than in any other place in the world, for no readily explainable reason.

3)The crystal skull

What is it?

A life-size carving of a human skull made from a single block of rock crystal (a clear, colourless variety of quartz). It was acquired by
the Museum in 1897 purporting to be an ancient Mexican object. However scientific research conducted by the Museum has established that the skull was most likely produced in the nineteenth century in Europe. As such the object is not an authentic pre-Columbian artefact.
4)Beast of Gevaudan - Werewolf or a Huge Wolf Like?Beast?//www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7kyYexEj-Q
In June 1764, in the Gevaudan region of southeastern France, a young woman was tending cows and saw a horrid beast lumbering towards her. It was the size of a donkey, but it resembled a wolf. Her dogs ran away in terror, but the cattle chased the beast away with their horns;Gevaudanwolf.jpg
This was the first sighting of what became known as the Beast of Gevaudanan. The woman was fortunate. Others were not so lucky. Men, women and children were killed, their bodies, savaged and mangled by the beast. The first victim, in July,
1764, was a young girl whose heart was ripped out. The slaughter resumed later that summer. Soon, the beast was attacking groups of men. It showed no fear. The people believed it was loup-garou, werewolf.
5) Bigfoot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bigfoot)
also known as sasquatch, is an ape-like cryptid that purportedly inhabits forests, mainly in the Pacific Northwest region of North America. Bigfoot is usually described as a large, hairy, bipedal humanoid. The term "sasquatch" is an anglicized derivative of the word "sésquac" which means "wild man" in a Salish Native American language.
Bigfoot is described in reports as a large hairy ape-like creature, ranging between 6–10 feet (2–3 m) tall, weighing in excess of 500 pounds (230 kg), and covered in dark brown or dark reddish hair. Alleged witnesses have described large eyes, a pronounced brow ridge, and a large, low-set forehead; the top of the head has been described as rounded and crested, similar to the sagittal crest of the male gorilla. Bigfoot is commonly reported to have a strong, unpleasant smell by those who claim to have encountered it. The enormous footprints for which it is named have been as large as 24 inches (60 cm) long and 8 inches (20 cm) wide. While most casts have five toes—like all known apes—some casts of alleged bigfoot tracks have had numbers ranging from two to six. Some have also contained claw marks, making it likely that a portion came from known animals such as bears, which have five toes and claws.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RDJlYD0-xYThe LochNess monster

The Loch Ness Monster (Scottish GaelicNiseag) is a cryptid that is reputed to inhabit Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. It is similar to other supposed lake monsters in Scotland and elsewhere, though its description varies from one account to the next. Popular interest and belief in the animal has varied since it was brought to the world's attention in 1933. Evidence of its existence is anecdotal, with minimal and much-disputed photographic material and sonar readings.
The most common speculation among believers is that the creature represents a line of long-surviving plesiosaurs.The scientific community regards the Loch Ness Monster as a modern-day myth, and explains sightings as a mix ofhoaxes and wishful thinking.[4] Despite this, it remains one of the most famous examples of cryptozoology. The legendary monster has been affectionately referred to by the nickname Nessie (Scottish GaelicNiseag) since the 1950s.

T6 : Better Dead than Red

-Better Dead than Red is a short satire aimed at fears that captivated and consumed 1950's Cold War-era America. Portrayed in the style of a propaganda news reel, subjects such as fear of communism, the "birth" of the pledge of allegiance, and the race for space are explored with sarcastic urgency.
"Better dead than Red" was an anti-Communist phrase, possibly first used during World War II and later during the Cold War by the United States. It was possibly coined by Nazi Germany's propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels, in the end phase of the Second World War to motivate the German military and population to fight the Soviet Red Army to the end.

1)Pair work : Watch the video above and describe it to your partner.
2) Group work  : Explain  what the Americans feared  in the 50s; use adjectives to qualify their feelings then.
What were the consequences of these fears on their everyday life ? On the school rules ? On the government's decisions ?
-Rephrase now using notions of reproach : what does this humouristic video blame the Americans for ?
Use other adjectives to qualify them from today's point of view.
