Selma trailer: the story of Martin Luther King Jr

Watch British actor David Oyelowo's portrayal of Martin Luther King Jr in the Oscar-tipped Civil Rights drama, co-starring Oprah Winfrey and Tom Wilkinson

Selma is the story of Americans' journey towards civil rights, led by Martin Luther King Jr. The film has a cast of largely British stars, including David Oyelowo as Luther King Jr and Tom Wilkinson as Lyndon B Johnson, as well as Tim Roth, Martin Sheen and Carmen Ejogo. Oprah Winfrey plays civil rights activist Annie Lee Cooper, and is also credited as producer.
The film focuses on the epic 54-mile civil rights marches from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965, which played a significant role in persuading President Johnson to introduce the Voting Rights Act. The pivotal marches were marked by brutal police violence against the peaceful protesters.
It's a particularly topical story in the wake of recent police violence against black citizens in Ferguson, Missouri, and the killings of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, showing that race is still a critical political issue in America. The film is already considered a frontrunner in next year's Oscars.

FREEDOM MARCH/ KING LEADS THE MARCH ON WASHINGTON In early 1965, Martin Luther King Jr.’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) made Selma, Alabama, the focus of its efforts to register black voters in the South. That March, protesters attempting to march from Selma to the state capital of Montgomery were met with violent resistance by state and local authorities. As the world watched, the protesters (under the protection of federalized National Guard troops) finally achieved their goal, walking around the clock for three days to reach Montgomery. The historic march, and King’s participation in it, greatly helped raise awareness of the difficulty faced by black voters in the South, and the need for a Voting Rights Act, passed later that year.
