1eres S-ES : Little Rock Nine 1957



The Little Rock Nine were a group of nine African American students enrolled in Little Rock Central High School in 1957. Their enrollment was followed by the Little Rock Crisis, in which the students were initially prevented from entering the racially segregated school by Orval Faubus, the Governor of Arkansas. They then attended after the intervention of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

1eres S-ES :African American History For Kids, Famous African Americans



Do you know about these famous African -American icons ? Associate their names with their achievements and photos. Then find the missing character and write a short definition of him/her.



A- abolitionisthumanitarian, and, during the American Civil War, a Union spy. Born into slavery, she escaped and subsequently made some thirteen missions to rescue approximately seventy enslaved family and friends, using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. She later struggled for women's suffrage.



B-Jamaican reggae singer, song writer, musician, and guitarist who achieved international fame and acclaim.Pan-Africanist, and believed in the unity of African people worldwide. 


C-He is an American former professional boxer, generally considered among the greatest heavyweights in the history of the sport.  He is now highly regarded for the skills he displayed in the ring plus the values he exemplified outside of it: religious freedom, racial justice and the triumph of principle over expedience. He is one of the most recognized sports figures of the past 100 years, crowned "Sportsman of the Century" by Sports Illustrated and "Sports Personality of the Century" by the BBC.


D-an American statesman and a retired four-star general in the United States Army. He was the 65th United States Secretary of State, serving under U.S. President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2005, the first African American to serve in that position.


E-an African-American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. After escaping from slavery, he became a leader of the abolitionist movement, gaining note for his dazzling oratory and incisive antislavery writings.


F-American actress, comedian, writer, social critic, and television host. She has been nominated for 13 Emmy Awards for her work in television, and is one of the few entertainers who has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award.Her breakthrough role was playing a mistreated black woman in the  drama film The Color Purple (1985).


G-American political activist, scholar, and author. She emerged as a prominent counterculture activist and radical in the 1960s as a leader of the Communist Party USA, and had close relations with the Black Panther Party through her involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. Her interests included prisoner rights.


H-She was born on January 31 1977 in The Bronx, New York City . She is an actress, known for Django Unchained (2012), Scandal (2012) .


I-Throughout the 20th century, America's Black fraternities and sororities have provided young African-American achievers with opportunities to support each other, while serving their communities and the nation.


J-She created specialized hair products for African-American hair and was one of the first American women to become a self-made millionaire.


K-an American hip hop group from  QueensNew York, founded in 1981 by Joseph SimmonsDarryl McDaniels, and Jam Master Jay. The group is widely acknowledged as one of the most influential acts in the history of hip hop culture


L- an American political scientist and diplomat. She served as the 66th United States Secretary of State, and was the second person to hold that office in the administration of President George W. Bush. She was the first female African-American secretary of state.

M- was an African-American Civil Rights activist, whom the United States Congress called "the first lady of civil rights" and "the mother of the freedom movement".On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, She refused to obey a bus driver 's order to give up her seat in the colored section to a white passenger.
